Welcome to an even-more-bumper Autumn edition. I’m getting used to it now: the early panic that there won’t be enough material, followed by the late discovery that there’s more than ever!
Once again, a big, big thank you to all the contributors. You make it happen.
This edition is a mix of long and short reads. We start with Roger’s intriguing explainer on ‘what3words’, a location service endorsed by no less than our triple zero emergency system.
Following that, I wrote such a massive screed on the Larapinta that it’s split over 2 articles: a general preparation guide and an itinerary including Mt Giles.
Then Arthur and Ann Ward have compiled a fascinating look at an animal that we are perhaps guilty of saying “how pretty” and then thinking no more about. After this, I guarantee you will!
From the archive comes an almost unique circumnavigation of Wilpena Pound. You would think it was the most logical way to approach the structure, but after reading you’ll see why it isn’t the easiest.
Next, Jules has once again done a blinder of a walk, with unthinkable elevation change. As if the Snowies Alpine Trail isn’t hard enough on its own!
Last, I’ve put together a quick summary of how the Grampians has fared after the devastating summer fires. I’ll try to update this piece as more comes to light.
Enjoy, and please give feedback where it’s helpful. Lastly, it’s the AGM next month. I’ve had a lot of fun doing this, and am keen to continue, but…
If you’d like to have a crack at it, please put your hat in the ring when we call for nominations! It’s a task that two heads will do better than one. I’ll be around to help whether I’m official editor or not.
